Reduction of Water Consumption and Maintenance with Intralox Sanitation Solution

Background
Grupo Consorcio is a Spanish processor of canned seafood products, including tuna, sardines, and anchovies. The company has four plants: three in Spain and one in Peru. Its products are sold worldwide at retailers such as El Corte Ingles, Eroski, and Carrefour. As a continual corporate objective, Grupo Consorcio endeavors to improve quality in order to offer the best products on the market.

Problem
Before working with Intralox, a Grupo Consorcio plant had flat belting installed on its production line. The flat belting was very expensive to maintain due to frequent tracking problems, bearing problems, and belt breakage from high tension. Additionally, the belting was difficult to clean and presented contamination hazards due to tearing. The company turned to Intralox for a solution that would reduce maintenance costs, improve belt cleanability, and reduce the risk of product contamination, with a quick payback of investment.

Solution
Intralox modular plastic belts are positively driven, eliminating problems of mistracking and costly maintenance. The durable, non-porous, plastic surface of the belts reduces contamination risks and is easy to clean. With an entire line of products devoted to enhancing sanitation efficiency, Intralox recommended the precise conveyance solution for the application to solve Grupo Consorcio’s problems: Intralox SeamFree™ belting, which has been proven to deliver savings in cleaning time and water consumption, and an EZ Clean In Place system, which maximizes the cleanability of the belt underside, sprockets, and shafts. Grupo Consorcio opted for Intralox’s Turnkey Retrofit solution, allowing Intralox to take full responsibility of the retrofit project and guarantee the success of the new solution.

Results
Since installing the Intralox solution, the plant has experienced a 45% reduction in water consumption, as well as increased product throughput. Additionally, the incidence of product contamination has dropped, improving the quality of the end product. The company reports being 100% satisfied with the no-downtime, maintenance-free Intralox solution. “The most important thing is that we have reduced man labor, maintenance, and belt cleaning time,” said Carlos Diloy of Grupo Consorcio.
