RFID tag-embedded plastic bottle cap

Wednesday 28 March 2007

NEC and Toyo Seikan Kaisha together have developed a plastic bottle cap with an integrated RFID tag.

The cap remains almost the same in size and can still be applied using existing equipment. The tag is specially designed to prevent transmissions to fail due to the drink or other moisture.
The companies are considering producing affordable readers for individual consumers, giving room for commercial information from the manufacturer to this consumer.

Mass-production of the RFID-cap is planned for 2008. Next to bottle caps application in metal cans, plastic containers, glass bottles, paper and other types of packages is investigated.
