Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by abnormal glucose metabolism. Currently, there is no investigative study that is possible in humans. However, animal models do provide an opportunity to study this problem. This book presents a current comprehensive review of what is known about the Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rat, a recently discovered excellent animal model for human NIDDM. It provides valuable opportunities to study diabetes mellitus and gives us precious clues to grasp the nature of diabetes mellitus in humans. To fulfill this purpose, a model animal should bear a close resemblance to humans in respect to the nature of the disease. The OLETF rat, a genetic model of spontaneous development of NIDDM, exhibits hyperglycemic obesity with hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance similar to those in humans. Implementing preventive measure is difficult in humans but the possibilities can be examined in the animal models. This volume includes studies of the OLETF rat ... its genetic background, pathology, pathogenesis, biochemical profiles, and diabetic complications. It also includes the effects of various interventions on its diabetic condition. This book will hopefully aid future studies on NIDDM in humans and further investigate the nature of the disease using the OLETF rat.
