A major supplier of can sealing equipment is Angelus Sanitary Can Machine Company (U.S.A.) and they have specific lubricant recommendations which are based on their field experience. These recognise that with the presence of steam (from the processing) and water (from equipment cleaning activities) heavy water contamination of the lubrication systems is possible. As a result of this, and a combination of equipment design and customer operating procedures, the use of conventional de-emulsifying lubricants may lead to corrosion problems.

Angelus also have reservations about the performance of Food grade lubricants which is based primarily on experience of older technology white oil based products.

Canning and bottling operations can be very large scale and in food industry terms consume above average quantities of lubricants.
