Cardboard composite with 28 per cent less CO2

Tuesday 10 August 2010

combibloc EcoPlus is an aseptic carton pack for liquid foods that has a special new composition generating 28 per cent less CO2 – compared to the same-format 1-litre carton pack from SIG Combibloc. CO2 reductions are based on product lifecycle from the production of raw materials to the finished carton pack.

Significantly less CO2, in return for a higher content of renewable resource – a clear plus for the environment.

New composite structure
With combibloc EcoPlus, the key factor in reducing CO2 generation to this level is a new type of composite structure. A special unprocessed cardboard gives the combibloc EcoPlus carton its rigidity. In the new composite structure, the content of cardboard that is obtained from the renewable resource wood, is more than 80 per cent. The specific characteristics of the cardboard ensure the foods that are subsequently filled into the carton pack are protected from light. A special new, ultra-thin polyamide layer acts as a barrier to protect against flavour impairment and external odours. Added to this are fine internal and external layers of polyethylene. The internal polyethylene layer forms a liquid barrier for the product, and the external layer keeps moisture out.

To begin with, combibloc EcoPlus is available in the combiblocSlimline 1,000 ml format, in the long-life milk and dairy products segments. In the future, the concept will also be offered for non-carbonated juice products and in other formats.

combibloc EcoPlus carton packs can be filled using the standard filling machines from SIG Combibloc. All that is required is a one-off adjustment to the filling machine parameters.
